Keynote Talks Overview:

Lisbeth Marcher Growing through connection;  Mutual connection and dignity as the foundation for growth.

This keynote will delve into the foundational philosophy of the Bodynamic approach, highlighting the essential role of mutual connection and dignity in human development. We will start with a brief historical overview of my vision in founding Bodynamic and the evolution of the system.

Next, we will explore the core principle that our inherent interdependence does not diminish our dignity or individuality. You’ll discover how true growth arises not from threats or punishment, but from understanding the impact of our actions on others. We will also discuss the crucial role of empathy as a resource, enabling us to honor both our own experiences and the realities of others.

Edward Tronick PhD – The Fundamental Dynamic Underlying Relationships and How Child-Parent Relationships Shed Light on the Therapeutic Relationship.

The processes driving development of the child, primarily those embedded in the parent-child relationship, are the most striking mechanisms of human change. Underlying this change process is the fundamental dyadically organized exchange regulating biopsychological organization. Therapy too works to change the functioning of individuals. The suggestion is advanced that the qualities of the parent-child relationship that promote change and growth can aid our understanding of the success or failure of patient-therapist relationship to induce change. While the differences between therapy and the parent-child relationship are significant, the basic characteristics of the parent-child relationship are similar. The issues of the necessity of micro-temporal dyadic organization, the fundamental messy process of meaning making, and reparation are discussed and illustrated using videos from my research on the Still-Face and parent-child interactions.

Raja Selvam PhD – The Scientific Basis of Bodynamic Analysis

The scientific findings in cognitive and affective neurosciences and cognitive psychology in the past twenty-five years have established beyond doubt that cognition, emotion, and behavior are dependent not only on the brain but also on the body and the environment; and that any therapeutic modality that does not include the body in some way risks falling behind other modalities that are becoming more effective from greater embodiment of their approaches. In this presentation, Dr Raja Selvam will present some of the recent major scientific findings that make a strong case for the embodiment of all therapy approaches and show how they provide a priori scientific validity to the empirically derived theory of the Bodynamic Somatic Developmental Psychology approach.

Ian McNaughton MBA, PhD, FEA, SEP – Keynote cancelled

Ditte Marcher – Embodied Connection: Exploring the Unique Tools of Ego Functions

This keynote will highlight the unique and remarkable tools of Ego Functions. Bodynamic is the only system in the world developed through empirical research to demonstrate how all muscles in our body contribute to our daily functioning and interactions with others.

Certain muscles in our body enable us to face the challenges of life. Others are crucial for developing our cognitive skills. Some muscles empower us to maintain our strength and move forward, while others help us keep our physical and psychological center, allowing us to move from within ourselves in a state of connectedness. Additional muscles help us maintain social balance, enabling us to adapt without having to assimilate.

Our boundaries start with our body. Our ability to regulate and experience our emotions is also linked to specific muscles that support us in this process.

This lecture will be a journey exploring how we coexist with ourselves and others through our bodies. Prepare to not just listen but to experience this together.

I am eagerly anticipating sharing my enthusiasm with you and connecting over our incredible capacities. There will be no PowerPoints; it will just be us, and that’s more than enough.

Remember, “We all grasp before we understand.” And another thing we all share, no matter where we come from—East, West, South, or North: “We all have a body.”

Kim Barthel – Neurodiverse – Affirming Practice in Psychotherapy

Creating meaningful therapeutic connections with neurodiverse clients can sometimes be a challenge. Whether you’re supporting someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Dyslexia, or other neuro-differences, this presentation will help equip you with the information and insights needed to establish effective and respectful connections.

In this one-hour keynote with Kim Barthel, gain a deeper understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals and how we can support them in being their best selves, however they define that. Learn how to create a supportive, inclusive, and empowering therapeutic environment that nurtures trust and fosters growth. Neurodiverse-affirming practice, especially when integrated with Bodynamic concepts, will elevate your practice, making you a more aware, empathetic, and effective psychotherapist for all your clients. “Autism is not a disability; it is another ability.” – Ditte Marcher, 2024

Siegmar Gerken – Psychology of Embodiment in the Fields of Embodiment; Body-Feelings-Psyche-Mind-Consciousness and the State of Love

We all know, that we are more than body and brain functions. Psychology and science are finally waking up to an expanded reality that we all are part of.

My Near Death Experiences when I was five years old and all my further extra-sensory experiences could have been traumatizing experiences, however, they turned into the commitment to bring understanding and light into peoples body and existence and kindled the curiosity to learn about principles of life.

This lead me to study our body and its emergent capacity to sense and feel, and our participation in developing a personality and the structuring of our mind – and also how to walk the transpersonal edge of the material and non-material world while staying connected to my essential Being.

The Lover of Life in me knows – the therapist, trainer and scientist in me wants to research and document, so that we can translate this knowledge into an approach of integration and healing – and ultimately into a state of Love.

English Workshops Overview:

Mar Barosso – The Dynamic Triangle – Integrating Muscles, Character Structures, and Ego Functions in a 3D Model

I am excited to invite you to an innovative workshop that could transform our practice and expand our understanding of Bodynamic Therapy. This event is a unique opportunity to investigate into the three-dimensional approach that integrates character structures, ego functions, and muscles, providing holistic and effective treatment.

We know that integrating this three-dimensional method can often be challenging. The intricacy of mapping and identifying character structures, determining the most appropriate ego function, and selecting the specific muscle to stimulate without the client interrupting the emotional activation, can make clinical practice demanding. In this workshop, we will address these specific challenges, exploring how to work simultaneously with character structures, ego functions, and muscles using a 3D Bodynamic Integration Model.

For those who curious about Bodynamic Therapy, this is a fascinating field that combines psychology and physiology, focusing on the interconnectedness of body, mind, and emotions. The three-dimensional approach we present in the workshop treats the individual holistically, considering not only psychological aspects but also body expression and muscle functions. You will see how we, as therapists, use these techniques to achieve profound and lasting results.

This workshop offers a practical experience where everyone can immediately apply the knowledge gained. Additionally, it will be an excellent opportunity to connect with other professionals and enthusiasts in the field, creating a network of support and collaboration.

The protocol I have considered begins with identifying the Character Structure activated in the client using the BODYKNOT. Through verbal and non-verbal observations, you will learn to recognize behavioral, and bodily signals that indicate which structure is at play. Next, we will choose the corresponding Ego Function by analyzing the client’s interactions and behaviors to identify the relevant function. Finally, we select the muscle to be worked on based on the information collected, applying practical exercises to activate specific muscles and promote therapeutic integration.

Workshop Benefits:

  • Expand your therapeutic repertoire and transform your clinical practice with three-dimensional approaches.
  • Connect with other professionals, share experiences, and build a network of support and collaboration.
  • Deepen your understanding of the body-mind relationship, improving therapeutic effectiveness.

Siegmar Gerken – The Living Pulsation of Embodiment; How to sustain your Pulsation of Life in a world of conflicts and crisis

The pulsation of your heart carries the Pulsation of Life, the Pulsation of the Earth, the Universe, the Cosmos – it is the Pulsation of Being – a journey of manifestation and healing.

Come, and tune in to the larger meaning of your journey in this life and connect with your intention to realize your potential in this body, on this earth, in this universe.

Participate in a dynamic personal and group process, leading you with your senses and perceptions through the stages of your personal development to an authentic expression of your Body-Feeling-Mind Field.

This is your Healing Journey, renewing your commitment of Being in the expansion of your Consciousness of Embodiment -for the wellbeing of all life.

Wolfgang Brandt – Centering, from concept to embodied experience

Centering is a concept in almost all bodypsychotherapies. In Bodynamic we understand Centering as having a  sensing contact with a physical structure of muscles and fascia. This will shift the experience of Being from thinking (head) or feeling (heart) to coherent sensing (hara) and values. At the same time we get contact to the most powerful muscle groups is our body.  In that way, coherent sensing and acting is linked.

In this workshop we will focus on two of 20 muscles connected to the ego function Centering in Bodynamic. This will be the muscle psoas major and the muscle group of the pelvic floor. These two areas make it possible to experience the power of action or the power of coherence separately and then connect both as a centered Being.

Anna Wolter & Carlo Le Sage – Positioning in your life

As humans, we have chosen to stand and experience the full effects of gravity, constantly resisting it to avoid falling. We are continually working to carry ourselves, maintain our position in reality, and stay in the flow. Positioning ourselves in life is something we do from within, based on our bodies and our relationship to this reality. In this way, gravity is an essential part of our positioning.

How can we then move forward in our lives? How do we position ourselves in our careers, partnerships, families? How can we become visible?

We have certain muscles that support us in “standing by this life.” Other muscles help us “stay in power.” Still others support our ability to “stand on our own two feet” in this life. Some help us “stand by our own norms and values in this reality,” and others help us “orient ourselves.”

In this small workshop, we will work on these skills using theory and practice through various exercises.

Sarah Cornish – Understanding of interpersonal connections and self-awareness

Hello, I’m Sarah. It’s my pleasure to invite you to a transformative workshop at the upcoming Bodynamic International Conference. Drawing from my extensive background as a body psychotherapist with a specialization in Somatic Experiencing and Bodynamic theory, we will embark on a gentle and introspective journey to deepen our understanding of interpersonal connections and self-awareness.

During our session, we will thoughtfully explore the subtle dynamics that influence how we establish boundaries and attend to our personal needs and desires. We’ll also examine the impact of early childhood experiences on our current expectations of ourselves and others.

I will introduce foundational concepts on how our musculature communicates through body postures that are reflective of our underlying character traits. This heightened awareness of often overlooked behaviors will empower us to better align our actions with our true needs and aspirations.

Together, through experiential learning, we will cultivate the ability to set clearer intentions, fostering more fulfilling and authentic relationships. I look forward to sharing this enriching experience with you and facilitating your journey towards greater clarity and alignment in both personal and professional realms.

Inna Gavryliuk – The Therapist’s Body in Psychotherapy: How Bodynamic Tools and Skills Can Benefit Professionals in the Helping Professions

I have been conducting supervision for psychotherapists for 14 years and became a Bodynamic supervisor in 2017. Throughout these years, the question “how to teach those who care for others to care for themselves” has been a cornerstone for me. Bodynamic analysis offers a unique approach with a myriad of effective tools for working with clients. It is not just a psychotherapy approach; it is a philosophy that integrates body, emotions, mind, and spirit. It is a way of thinking, feeling, and sensing.

What helps the client solve their problems? What makes individual or group therapy effective? What helps a psychotherapy teacher teach students? As Lennart Ollars writes in the article “Supervision with the Bodily Anchor,” it is, of course, skills and tools, determined by the method, experience, and background of the practitioner. Additionally, it is the therapist’s (or teacher’s) communication skills and ability to stay in contact and support dynamic processes. A crucial aspect is what Lennart Ollars calls authenticity: the therapist’s ability to feel themselves, stay in contact with themselves, replenish their resources, and sense their center, ground, and energy flow.

In my workshop, I will explore and explain this model in more detail. We will focus on the third aspect of the model—authenticity—and work on discovering, mastering, and supporting vital skills that help you replenish your resources and avoid depletion in your role as a psychotherapist, psychologist, social worker, teacher, or medical professional.

This workshop will be useful for both beginners and experienced practitioners. If you know the feeling of fatigue, if you sometimes think, “it would be good if the client canceled the meeting,” if after a working day you have no energy to communicate with your loved ones, or if after a day of teaching you feel like a squeezed lemon, you will definitely find my workshop useful and interesting.

Michael Rupp – The Power of the Embodied Heart, A synthesis of the Bodynamic method and insights from Eastern Wisdom Traditions

In many ways, living our full human potential means living a life from the heart. A powerful heart gives us the courage and strength to act decisively. Being heartful is about expressing our affection and love openly without fearing how others might react. Accordingly, our heart presence will determine our ability to relate to others in a deep and meaningful way. If our “heart is not in it,” then something or someone doesn’t truly touch us. This also means that when we close and protect our hearts too much, we cannot fully come into contact. We cannot really trust. Relationships will remain superficial and will not satisfy us in any true, emotional, or lasting way.

But what makes a heart strong? And how can we truly meet others from our hearts?

We are often afraid of our own emotions and heart feelings. Our heart presence and emotional capacity depend greatly on our physical heart space, meaning the chest, the muscles around the chest, and our back. Also, the way we breathe, especially with our diaphragm. A tense, rigid, and contracted heart space will restrict our breathing and prevent a natural flow of emotions. In the extreme, this can become like armor, hard and impenetrable, completely locking our heart in. In this state, the world becomes a colder place, and people are seen more as objects than felt as humans.

On the other extreme, if our heart or heart space is too open, we become too vulnerable. In this version, the heart lacks physical containment and backup (the container muscles around our heart space are too slack). When we start loving somebody, it feels like losing our heart to them. This is further aggravated by typically pulling the pelvis back and thus disconnecting from our belly center, which helps us stay rooted in ourselves. Instead of giving FROM our heart, we end up weakened, dependent, and feeling deprived.

In this workshop, we will work on empowering our heart by learning to manage our emotions (accept, contain, and express appropriately) in contact with other people in the group. Furthermore, we will develop more awareness around opening or closing our heart in specific relations and situations. To this end, we will use specific techniques and exercises from Bodynamic and Sufism to work on our heart space and breathing, as well as strengthening the connection between our heart and pelvis.

An embodied heart has the transformative force we need to live a fuller, truly spiritual life. Learn to trust the power of your embodied heart and follow its wisdom!

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” —Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

İlknur İnci &  Dilara Özel: Regulation/Stabilization in Group Settings with Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is an approach that focuses on developing resources after traumatic events. SE aims at nervous system regulation by increasing access to body sensations using introceptive awareness. Defining psychological resilience as the resolution of challenging events without eliciting fight/flight or freeze responses from the nervous system. SE aims to cope with stressful situations by regulating the autonomic nervous system.

Although SE is a relatively new approach, studies showing the impact of the SE approach in a short period of time are increasing. In addition to these studies, the short term regulation effects of the SE approach in group settings have been proven by recent studies. Since it is possible to reach many people in a short time with group work, it is also time-effective to use psychotherapy groups with the SE approach to build resources and track the sensations.

In this experiential group work, Somatic Experiencing based regulation/stabilization exercises will be introduced. How SE can be supportive in group settings for the people working in the disaster areas as well as for the people who underwent the traumatic process such as earthquake, will be discussed.

İlknur İnci holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and is involved with Somatic Experiencing Türkiye and Integral Somatic Psychology (ISP) trainings. She works as a psychotherapist and supervisor at the Existential Academy of Istanbul and has led research efforts on the effectiveness of Somatic Experiencing® for healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, earning the Peter Levine Research Award. Dilara Özel, with a PhD in counseling, has worked on research projects with various prestigious institutions and is an advanced-level student in Somatic Experiencing training. She also won the Peter Levine Award for her research on coping with stress during uncertain times and has received additional training in therapies such as Experiential Play, IMAGO Couples Therapy, and the Adlerian Approach.

James Nicholas – Waking the Adult Ego: Using Bodynamic to effectively reparent the Inner Child

We begin life born free but vulnerable, entirely dependent on others. As adults, we are responsible for our actions, behaviors, and intentions, guided by both what we intend and what we should foresee as consequences. The tension between dependence and freedom, humility and pride, identity and essence shapes our journey. Adults often fail to behave like adults because they don’t feel like adults; they haven’t embraced their full potential or “coding.” Human potential is a right, but it must be claimed, and obstacles like lack of self-worth, knowledge, and power hinder this. Becoming an adult requires a delicate balance between accepting responsibility for one’s trauma and victimization without making oneself a victim. The process involves reclaiming childhood’s vitality while embracing the realities of adulthood. Therapists sometimes struggle with moral injury, losing themselves in the desire to “save” others. True adulthood involves reclaiming our dignity, balancing connection and independence, and integrating support into self-support. Bodynamic tools focus on body awareness and specific muscles to cultivate self-esteem, willpower, and autonomy. Through exercises, we can transform past shame into pride and self-care, guiding us toward who we want to become, transcending old narratives to embrace our full potential.

Fatma Tosuntaş: Boundaries and Feeling Secure Workshop

I am a separate individual. Besides being a separate individual, I am a social being. A healthy relationship is possible with healthy boundaries. In a relationship, without dissolving into the other person’s space or adapting to their needs, or expecting them to adapt to mine, I need to feel my own space and self. In this seminar, inspired by the Bodynamic approach, we will explore the importance of having boundaries and a secure space.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychological Counseling and Guidance from Marmara University, Fatma Tosuntaş completed a two-year Family and Couple Therapy Certificate program at Istanbul Bilgi University. She has received training in various approaches, including EMDR, PACT, systemic constellations, Somatic Experiencing, Integral Somatic Psychology, Bodynamic Basic Training, and many more. She is currently continuing her advanced Bodynamic Therapy and Practitioner training and assisting in Bodynamic training in Turkey. She has participated in numerous systemic constellation training and workshops, some led by Mark Wolynn and other foreign and local experts. Currently, she conducts individual sessions and group work as a psychological counselor, systemic constellation facilitator, and trainer at Ataşehir Pakua, which she founded. She combines her 22 years of experience and all counseling approaches she has learned, using a holistic and experiential perspective with systemic constellation, inner dialogue method, somatic, and psychosynthesis techniques.

Görkem Dizdar: Neuro-Developmental Treatment and Body Awareness

In this seminar, we will address the effects of neuro-developmental treatment methods on body awareness. Participants will learn how neuro-developmental treatment techniques can be used to make the body more consciously aware and how this awareness can be applied in daily life.

Görkem Dizdar graduated from Dokuz Eylül University’s Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in 2001 and completed his master’s degree at the same university. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies, specializing in areas such as neuro-developmental treatment, manual therapy, and dancer injuries.
